Conservation Challenges Faced by this Species:

Luangwa Valley, Zambia

The main threat to the species is illegal hunting to support the illegal rhino horn trade. Rhino horns have been traditionally used in Chinese medicines and ornamental use and have recently become more desirable as a material for making high-status items, such as bowls or bangles. Increased poaching has led to increased protection costs for rhinos and increased risk for investment and staff, making conservation even more challenging.
