Patagonia, Chile
The populations of Patagonian huemul are highly fragmented due to the historical expansion of both agriculture and development across the country. This has led to low genetic diversity within subpopulations that leads to reduced ability to recover from other threats. Close proximity to livestock has led to high levels of competition for food alongside the spread of disease. Dogs have also caused substantial mortalities within populations, further decreasing numbers.
