Conservation Challenges Faced by this Species:

Simeulue, Indonesia

The deaths of leatherback turtles due to fishery bycatch, alongside direct hunting of adults and eggs for consumption and wildlife trade, have led to vast declines in populations worldwide. Due to global warming and pollution in the oceans, foraging habitats have declined rapidly. Coastal development and increasing sand temperatures have reduced the success of nesting and affected the sex ratio of young leading to substantially reduced ability to recover.
