Conservation Challenges Faced by this Species:
Colombia (Caqueta, Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta), Costa Rica (Puntarenas), Venezuela (Deforsa), and Paraguay (Boquerón Department)
Large-scale deforestation for cattle ranching is destroying native moist forest which acts as vital habitat for jaguars. This leads to increased interactions with jaguars causing human-wildlife conflict. Agricultural barriers have also isolated many populations of jaguars causing significant reductions in genetic diversity. Illegal hunting of both the jaguar and its prey reduce populations and increase the number of livestock hunting incidents, causing increased retaliatory killing.
