Poaching for both personal and commercial consumption is the largest threat to wild populations. Wild yaks also have limited disturbance tolerance and so move away from regions where livestock are herded, meaning that increased expansion of livestock causes large-scale habitat loss. Interactions with livestock cause further issues through both interbreeding and disease transmission with domestics yaks. Human-wildlife conflict can also be high through overlapping ranges, sometimes leading to retaliatory killing.
