Conservation Challenges Faced by this Species:

Lothian, Scotland

Oystercatcher populations are declining due to over-fishing of benthic shellfish resulting in the disappearance of mussels and cockle beds, which are their main prey. Habitat degradation, pollution and human disturbance from construction apply further pressure to the species. Agriculture is also expanding causing reduced breeding success due to grazing and agrochemicals. Climate change combines to increase coastal erosion and flooding which can in turn further habitat loss.
