Assam and Darjeeling, India
Large-scale, illegal deforestation has forced the migration of elephants away from their natural habitats, resulting in animal-human conflicts as they move towards inhabited areas in search of food. The tea farming industry in India has also traditionally used solid walls and/or fences to keep elephants away from the tea trees. These measures prevent the free passage of Asian elephants through the forests, and have caused injuries.
