Conservation Challenges Faced by this Species:

The Okavango Delta Panhandle, Botswana

In Botswana, the government reintroduced the sale of hunting licenses that allow for the poaching of elephants by both citizens and tourists in 2019.

Luangwa Valley, Zambia

In Zambia, some farming families discovered that snaring animals could substitute farming. Farmers with firearms were able to make 2 to 3 times the annual income of non-hunting farmers.

Virunga Mountains, Rwanda

In Rwanda, elephants face habitat conversion, ivory poaching, and conflict with humans; these problems affect elephants across the entire African continent.

Kasigau, Kenya

In Kenya, tree logging, illegal grazing, and poaching all threaten the elephant population, though hunting is banned.
