Case Studies

Indonesia
In Java, Indonesia, the Certified Wildlife Friendly® Little Fireface Project is working to protect the habitat of the critically endangered Javan slow loris and other regional wildlife. The project promotes nature-positive coffee-farming practices, and is supported by a local hunting ban, as well as long-term biodiversity monitoring. The hand-picked Arabica coffee is cultivated in home gardens, covering an area of 60 hectares. These gardens are connected to the Gunung Papandayan Protected Forest. The farmers received extensive training from the government on organic practices, coffee processing, and roasting. Benefitting over 300 families in the surrounding community, this project is built around agroforestry, habitat connectivity, and lower-impact coffee production.
Cambodia
In rural Cambodia, agricultural-based livelihood development is limited by low prices offered by the few traders that come to remote villages. Ibis Rice partners with smallholder farmers who commit to protecting critical habitat for the endangered Giant Ibis and other threatened bird species. Farmers agree to zero forest clearance, protect nesting sites, reduce agrochemical use, and comply with strict land-use monitoring. In return, certified rice is sold at a premium to surrounding hotels and stores, linking biodiversity conservation directly to improved farmer incomes and long-term ecosystem protection. Additionally, villagers are able to access some of the benefits of increased environmental tourism to protected areas and help to conserve the environment of Tonle Sap, the world's largest freshwater floodplain lake.
