Wildlife Friendly® Cosmetics

The future of beauty depends on thriving ecosystems. From essential oils and botanicals to waxes, butters, and natural extracts, cosmetic ingredients are only as resilient as the landscapes from which they originate.

Wildlife Friendly® certification recognize s enterprises producing natural ingredients in ways that conserve native habitat, protect biodiversity, and support rural communities who steward these landscapes. Certification applies at the source of production, where ingredients are grown, harvested or produced, providing independent assurance that conservation has been embedded in ingredient production. Many Certified Wildlife Friendly® enterprises produce multiple natural ingredients for the cosmetics industry, giving brands the opportunity to source from landscapes where thriving ecosystems are an integral part of production. Explore the growing range of Certified Wildlife Friendly® ingredients below.

Scotland

Seilich, a Scottish beauty brand, is the first in the UK to attain Wildlife Friendly® Certification from Wildlife Friendly®. Seilich grows native and naturalised botanicals in Scottish wildflower meadows, creating semi-natural habitat within an intensively farmed landscape where biodiversity has been reduced by habitat loss, fragmentation, and pesticide use. In this way, Seilich provides ingredients for its products while creating vital pollinator habitats. Seilich’s meadows provide food and shelter for bumblebees, solitary bees, honeybees, hoverflies, butterflies, moths, and beetles; only part of the meadow is harvested, leaving the majority to support wildlife throughout the season. With 97% of the UK’s wildflower meadows lost, Seilich leads by example, proving that business practices can support conservation initiatives.

“The Widlife Friendly® certification proves that natural products can actively benefit nature, not just take from it.” - Dr. Sally Gouldstone, Seilich founder

Seilich's Meadow Blend Tea was awarded RHS Sustainable Excellence Award Lifestyle Product of the Year at the Chelsea Flower Show.

Indonesia

āluān, a coconut oil producer in Samuele, Indonesia, connects replanting, community based conservation, and coconut ingredients through one integrated supply chain.

At āluān, they understand that coconut oil is reliant on smallholder farms, yet many farms are aging, underproductive, and unable to access the financial resources required to replant coconut trees. Many farms have turned to oil palm trees instead, clearing away forested areas to make room.

Through regenerative agriculture practices and community conservation projects, āluān steps in to help protect the future of coconut products and the environments they thrive in in Indonesia. Their long-term goal is to regenerate one million hectares of ageing coconut landscapes across the country.

"The future of coconut depends on restoring productive farms, strengthening community livelihoods and protecting the ecosystems that support them"
